How to increase the life of your bra

Updated: Oct 16

A good bra is not cheap. This is a fact. So, to get the most out of your money, you'll want to make sure your bra lasts as long as possible. Read on to find out how.

Buy the Right Size

Buying a bra in the correct size is integral to its lifespan. If your band size is too big and requires you to do your new bra up on the last row of hooks, then when the bra stretches, you'll lose all support.

By contrast, when you buy a bra that fits you, you'll be doing it up on the first row of hooks. Then, as it stretches, you gradually move the hooks to maintain the same level of support. As a result, you get a longer life out of your bra.

Buy More than One

Just like you, your bras need rest. The heat of your body warms the elastic of the bra, which is what causes it to stretch. Therefore, the more you wear it, the faster it stretches. However, if you have more than one bra, you can alternate. This will ensure that the elastic doesn't wear out too quickly. Additionally, getting a break from your body's heat will allow the bra to maintain its shape better.

Wash by Hand

The washing machine is a death trap for underwire bras. Even on the delicate cycle, the wires can get pulled and stretched. Additionally, the hooks can bend or break, and the material can tear. Although non-underwire bras are at less risk in the washing machine, it's still better to wash by hand to ensure the bra's integrity remains intact.

Put It On Correctly

Believe it or not, you can reduce the life of your bra if you don't put it on properly. Unlike other types of lingerie, a bra is a delicate construction. Therefore, you have to be careful not to bend or twist the wires or seams when you put it on.

If you do your bra up in the front and then turn it around, make sure the cups are facing up and not down. If they're down, you'll have to flip them up, which could bend the wires or mangle the seams. Additionally, when you turn the bra from back to front, you'll want to make sure you don't twist it too much.

If you do your bra up in the back, you'll also want to make sure the cups are facing up. You'll also want to be careful not to pull too hard on the band when doing up the hooks.

Store Carefully

If you have moulded cup bras, you'll want to make sure that the cups are not crushed when you store them. So you should either hang them up or place your socks inside the cups when you put them in a drawer. For non-moulded bras, make sure the wires and/or bands aren't twisted when you store them. Furthermore, you'll want to ensure that your chosen storage method isn't too hot or too cold, as extreme temperatures can negatively affect a bra's integrity.

In sum, treat your bras well, and they'll be around to support you for a long time. If you want to know more about bras and bra care, visit our Bra Education page.
